Renesas Electronics Introduces World's First 28nm Automotive Grade MCU

Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE:6723), the world's leading semiconductor solutions provider, recently announced the industry's first integrated flash microcontroller (MCU) using the 28nm process, and will begin sampling today. In order to create the next generation of more efficient and reliable eco-friendly cars and self-driving cars, this revolutionary RH850/E2x series of microcontrollers has built up up to six 400Mhz processor cores, making it the first in the industry (Note 1) A car-controlled on-chip flash MCU that can reach 9600 MIPS (Note 2) command processing capability. Key features of the new RH850/E2x series MCUs

·Super processing performance, complex vehicle control required for environmentally friendly vehicles

In order to develop environmentally friendly vehicles and next-generation energy-efficient engines, superior processing performance is required to support new fuel system designs. In addition, for high-efficiency engines and converters for electric and hybrid vehicles, superior processing performance and high integration are essential conditions. The newly released 28nm process flash MCU is the world's first microcontroller with up to six 400MHz processing cores and 9600MIPS instruction speed. Compared to the early 40nm MCU, the new RH850/E2x series MCUs can achieve 3 times the processing performance at the same power consumption level. The enhanced sensor interface built into the RH850/E2x series provides better precision control for the integration of automotive control systems. For the new MCU, Renesas Electronics partners will also provide multi-core virtual environments and model-based development environments.

· Large-capacity flash memory for networked cars supports advanced OTA software updates

The demand for wireless download of OTA features has driven the increase in built-in flash memory capacity. The OTA feature automatically updates the vehicle's electronic control unit (ECU) firmware over the wireless network to improve and improve system security. The RH850/E2x series integrates 16MB of flash ROM and supports a specific area that only selects flash memory based on user needs. The RH850/E2x has an enhanced serial communication interface configuration that supports up to 10 channels of CANFD interface and 1 channel of Ethernet interface. Support for Evita Medium's hardware security features allows the microcontroller to perform OTA software updates quickly and reliably.

· Enhanced functional safety for self-driving cars

In order to achieve the highest level of ASIL-D standard in the ISO26262 automotive electronic/electrical system functional safety standard, the RH850/E2x series adopts a dual-core lock-step architecture to ensure the identical operation results of the two processing cores. The RH850/E2x offers up to four interlocking dual cores with functional safety improvements for many hardware. In life-critical applications, these features detect problems as they occur and automatically maintain the system at all times. Following the announcement of the development of 28nm embedded flash memory in February 2015, Renesas Electronics announced in September 2016 that it will cooperate with TSMC to produce 28nm MCUs. Introducing the world's first 28nm embedded flash MCU to the market today will be another important milestone for Renesas Electronics.
